Chestnut (Pholiota Adiposa)
Our Certified Organic Chestnut substrate is colonized in our facility for 3-4 weeks to allow for ideal maturation time and proper fruiting time which can be between 14-20 days. Our current chestnut substrate block size is 5 pounds. To initiate chestnuts into fruiting we suggest cutting a single line with a razor knife along the large side or the top of the block through the plastic. Use rubber band(s) to keep the plastic bag tight around the substrate, concentrating the fruiting area specific to the incision while simultaneously retaining the existing water content within the substrate block for the developing mushrooms.
Helpful Cultivation Notes:
- High humidification and colder temps will allow chestnut pins to form properly from the substrate
- co2 concentrations will change the number of forming caps and stems of the chestnut mushrooms as well as their size. Generally speaking 500-700ppms can be considered ideal.
- Chestnuts take a relatively long time to fruit, so if at first you don't see fruit bodies as fast as with Oysters or Shiitake, just hold fast for this delicious and coveted gourmet variety.
